North Carolina Rail-Trails summer 2015 newsletter feature article: 'Atlantic & Yadkin Rail-Trail: Path to a bright future in Guilford County' talks about the extensive trail system in Greensboro with over 90 miles of trail just in the Lake Brandt and Guilford Courthouse National Military Park area. Dabney Sanders, Project Manager for the Downtown Greenway says in the article: "Greensboro has a great trail system, but we lack connectivity to the urban core.' This of course will change soon with design nearly complete, and public and private funding that is 100% secured for the north, east, and south sections of the Downtown Greenway 4 mile loop. If you missed the strawberries in May, there are now pears growing on the trees at Meeting Place at Tradition Cornerstone! Stop by and pick a pear, but please pick just one so others may enjoy them too.
Meeting Place is located at the corner of Smith and Prescott Streets in downtown Greensboro. Click here for a map.
Thank you to those who were able to attend the Public Meetings for Phase 2 on April 27, 2015. We will have the 100% plans for Phase 2 completed in October and expect construction to begin in late summer 2016. Go to the complete construction timeline.

The Phillips Foundation has given a $1.5 million grant to the Downtown Greenway, giving the foundation naming rights for Phase 4 of the project which will follow the railroad tracks from Spring Garden to Hill Street. Design firm Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc has been selected to do the design work for this section. Elizabeth Phillips, Executive Director of Phillips Foundation, said "Our Downtown Greenway will be the only trail of its kind in North Carolina and one of just a few in the country." Construction expected to begin in 2017.
Minneapolis artist Randy Walker has been selected to design and create the Innovation Cornerstone (NE) at the corner of Lindsay Street and Murrow Boulevard. Randy's work has a relationship to both textiles and innovative play. Click here to see examples of his work and bio.
Timeline for construction of the cornerstone: Randy will return to Greensboro, June 3-5, 2015 for a series of meetings to learn more about the community to further inform his design for the Innovation Cornerstone. He will present a formal proposal for the site in July and then begin construction of the piece after approval. Anticipated installation of the artwork and completion of the site no later than Spring 2016.
