Description
This neighborhood bench represents the East Market Street neighborhood. The events of 2020 provided opportunities for people to reconsider their personal perspectives within the framework of race and identity. The inauguration poem authored by Amanda Gorman, the first US youth poet laureate, invoked the powerful memory of what we as a people have been asked to dream of for these United States. Her words rang as an eternal truth speaking deeply from our shared humanity. Artist Theresa Arico’s initial vision for Vigilance came while walking on farmland near her home, and was also informed by conversations with community leaders and stakeholders of the East Market Street area. This historic neighborhood, which is also home to several important HBCU’s, continues to be a vibrant example of the vigilance required to achieve our highest goals and hopes for the future while preserving the legacy of our past.
