2012 Downtown Greenway Recap
- 100% design is expected on the northern leg (Phase 2E and all of Phase 3, except 3B that is already under construction) by the end of 2012.
- The 3rd Annual Run 4 the Downtown Greenway was held on September 15 with more than 550 runners/walkers, 800 party participants, and more than $10,000 raised for the Downtown Greenway Maintenance Endowment Fund.
- Construction begins the end of August on Phase 3B—Smith Street between Eugene and Spring Streets—and is expected to be complete by the end of 2012.
- A public meeting was held June 26 for community input on design for Phase 3/2E, Phase 2 Summit/Murrow Interchange, and Phase 1B with more than 60 participants. Very good feedback allowed for some design decisions to be made.
- Morehead Park opened May 6 with more than 400 people attending, including special guests: NC Department of Cultural Resources Secretary Linda Carlisle and National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Rocco Landesman.
- Construction continues on Phase 1A with an expected completion in May 2012; a ribbon cutting and dedication of four major pieces of public art will take place May 6 from 2:00–5:00 pm.
- Design work continues on Phase 3 with the section along Smith Street between Eugene and Spring Streets fast-tracked so that construction of this section can happen in collaboration with the construction of the adjacent Greenway at Fisher Park Apartments project.
- Design work for other Phase 3 sections will continue and be completed by Summer 2012.
- A public meeting was held in February for Phase 1B with great attendance. Design work begins on this section in April 2012.
- Continued collaborative work with adjacent developments in Phase 1 with New Zion Church and TND Partners.
- Design work on Phase 2 will begin in April to take the 25% design to 100%. Public meetings will follow as we approach the 50% design stage.
