In a series of public meetings held on January 25, 2011, sculptor Jim Gallucci and lighting designer Scott Richardson presented concepts for their vision of transforming an abandoned railroad underpass sited on the Downtown Greenway between West Lee Street and Spring Garden Rd. into a public art space.

Gallucci and Richardson collaborated on a proposal that includes the design and fabrication of twelve decorative iron gates to be placed in existing arched doorways along the underpass, and innovative, interactive and colorful lighting that will illuminate the entire space. The design of the gates take their inspiration from decorative motifs found on the Bell South building located on S. Eugene Street in downtown Greensboro. The building dates from 1928, the same year as the underpass, and Gallucci's use of the art deco patterns in the design of the gates reinterprets the aesthetic of the day in a modern way. Richardson's lighting will create a constantly changing, colorfully illuminated experience for users of the Greenway. The concept is solves the need to provide a safe and exciting way to travel along this section of the Greenway.

Construction of this second phase is scheduled to begin this spring, and should take 6 months to complete. This RR Underpass Public Art Project is supported by a $100,000 grant from the National Endowment of the Arts.
Action Greensboro welcomes public comment on this concept until Tuesday, February 1. Click here to take our online survey!
