Call to Artists
December 1, 2010
The Downtown Greenway seeks proposals for the second of 12 neighborhood benches to be commissioned for the Downtown Greenway. It will be located in the Phase 1A section of the trail, which runs between West Lee Street and Spring Garden Street along the east side of Freeman Mill Road in the southwest section of downtown Greensboro.
THE PROJECT
In celebration of the unique qualities of Greensboro, North Carolina and its citizens, we take this moment in the city’s Bicentennial Celebration to initiate the creation of the Downtown Greenway. The Downtown Greenway is a 4-mile multi-use paved pathway for walking, biking and running that will loop around downtown and will promote fitness, connectedness, and well-being for all of our residents and visitors in an aesthetically pleasing environment.
A Public Art initiative has been established to integrate art into the construction process of this Greenway.
NEIGHBORHOOD BENCH PROJECT
An artist designed and/or fabricated bench will represent each of the 12 different neighborhoods or areas that the Downtown Greenway route travels through. The artist will be asked to work with the community and its members to capture the essence of the neighborhood’s past, present and/or future.
The Budget: the budget for the design, fabrication and installation of this project is $5000.
This will be the second neighborhood bench to be commissioned for the Greenway. It will be located in the Phase 1A section of the trail, which runs between West Lee Street and Spring Garden Street in Greensboro along the east side of Freeman Mill Road. The bench will be installed close to the Spring Garden Street end of the section. The neighborhood significance is more historical than residential in nature. The bench will reflect its proximity to Greensboro’s Blandwood Mansion, as well as its location near “Foundation Place”, a historic building that originally housed the executive offices of the Cone Export and Commission Company. Commodity exchanges for Cone Mills were made at this Greensboro site, rather than on Wall Street or at the Chicago Commodities Exchange. The commissioned bench should reflect the historical significance of this location.
Artist Eligibility: Action Greensboro’s Public Art Initiative’s Call to Artists is open to all professional artists who reside in North Carolina with experience in implementing and working in the public arena. Artists must be able to effectively work within the project timeline and collaborate with multiple governmental and community agencies.
APPLICATION PROCESS
The Greensboro Downtown Greenway LLC will manage the application and selection process. A Public Art Selection Panel will review applications. The Panel will include local arts professionals, and city, community and Bicentennial representatives. The Panel will review the submissions and select an artist to prepare a proposal to be presented to the Public Art Selection Panel at the offices of Greensboro Downtown Greenway LLC, 317 South Elm Street, Greensboro, NC.
