Frequently Asked Questions
Who will use the Downtown Greenway?
Tens of thousands of people. People who work downtown may stroll on it at lunch. People who live downtown are likely to use it for trips on their bikes around the center city. Many of Greensboro's 27,000 college students are within walking distance of the Greenway.
How much will it cost to build the Downtown Greenway?
The Greenway will be funded from a variety of sources - public, private and nonprofit. Greenway organizers expect the entire project to cost about $26 million, but more than half of those funds would likely come from federal and state grants, plus foundation grants and gifts from individuals and businesses. Some money will probably come from city bonds that would have to be approved by voters first. Those local bond funds would serve as matching funds for state and federal grants that typically require local matching dollars before an award is made. Some of the Greenway funds will be used for work, such as crossing improvements, that would eventually be done by the city even without a Greenway.
How will the Downtown Greenway be kept safe?
Greenways are typically safe. Because they turn unused and abandoned places into public spaces, they potentially can help improve the safety and desirability of neighborhoods adjacent to the Greenway. In addition, the Greenway will be well lit at all hours, providing a secure environment for people enjoying the Greenway. The Downtown Greenway will also be monitored by the City of Greensboro Police Department Downtown Bike Patrol.
How will the Greenway benefit neighborhoods in and around downtown?
The Greenway will connect more than a dozen neighborhoods in and around downtown Greensboro. It will provide an additional amenity for people who live in those neighborhoods, and also make it easier for them to get to other points in downtown. The Greenway will also boost the social connectedness of those neighborhoods by offering them a common space where residents will have more chances to meet one another and interact.
